Coola is a brand most known for their sunscreen. They claim to uses as many natural and organic ingredients as possible. When they launched sunless tanning products, I was very intrigued to try their Sunless Tan Anti-Aging Face Serum (say that 10 times fast!). I have been looking for a product that will gradually tan my face, but the idea of picking the wrong product and ending up looking like an Oompa Loompa has made me apprehensive. I simply do not live a lifestyle where I can pull off being orange for a week! The fact that this product claims to be an anti-ageing serum AND a gradual sunless tanner made this multitasking product too enticing to pass up.
This product claims to be a sheer, lightweight face serum with anti-agers and gradual self-tanner. The instructions say to use for several days to achieve a soft, subtle tan, then continue applying daily if you want to keep up the effect.
Scent: This serum smells like coconuts and I really like it! It dissipates quickly after applying.
Application: It comes in a glass bottle with a pump which makes is easier to use a consistent amount (I really love pumps!) I use this product at night after washing my face; it does leave you with a tacky feeling after application.
Formula/Texture: It comes out like a gel, but easily disperses on your hands when you rub them together to apply the product. It does not have the chemically smell that most self-tanners develop following application – which is fantastic because that drives me nuts!
Performance: I’ve been using this serum every night for about three weeks and I do NOT look tan. I was hoping that it would gradually build over a few days and that I could stop applying it when I reached my desired color. Unfortunately when I wake up every day, I’m disappointed (okay, that sounds sadder then I intended). It does give me a slight, tiny bit of color. When I look in my 10x magnification mirror I can see that there is some color but that’s really the only way I can tell that it’s leaving any kind of pigment behind. I was hoping for a “just got back from a beach vacation” look and what I got was “she may have stepped outside for a moment without sunscreen”.
Comparison to other similar products: I have tried other self-tanners with much more impactful results, but they were simply self-tanners without any other skincare benefits, so it’s tricky to compare.
The verdict: I’m feel like someone fairer than I might enjoy this product (although that might be a very small group!). It’s easy to use and does not streak, but without providing any noticeable color, it’s hard to give the product credit for not streaking.
Let’s go back to the product claims and see how this product did.
- Sheer: Well, yeah, it’s a serum and it is in fact sheer.
- Lightweight face serum: I would agree here too.
- Anti-agers: Ya know, it’s hard to tell if you’ve aged over a three week period of time so…undecided.
- Gradual self-tanner: Unless the “gradual” part was intended to go beyond three weeks of regular use, then I’m going to have to say that this is where we disagree.
Pros: It smells good, it’s easy to use and the bottle is pretty.
Cons: It’s really expensive and the tan was not impressive enough to justify the cost.
